Karya embroidery, or the elegance of traditional embroidery

Nestled in the heart of the island of Lefkada in Greece (Ionian Islands), Karya is first and foremost a small, picturesque village, which offers an authentic and different experience, far from the tourist seaside resorts of the region.

Located about 15 kilometers from the capital, this charming town in the olive groves, surrounded by green mountains, is full of breathtaking landscapes.

But above all, it is the cradle of a unique tradition, of an exceptional embroidery stitch, unique in the world: the Karya stitch!

Known as “Karsaniki”, this embroidery technique, passed down from generation to generation, is both elegant, precise and refined and has simply revolutionized the art of embroidery.

The origin of “Karsaniki” embroidery

The amazing story of this young woman, Maria Stavraka , who invented and then developed a truly extraordinary embroidery technique at the very beginning of the 20th century, which has today become a true treasure of Greek cultural heritage.

After losing the use of her right hand (hence her nickname: Maria "Koutsohero", literally "Maria with the crippled hand"), she learned to embroider, alone, with her left hand, thus creating unique, meticulous and complex designs, which have become emblematic!

Her determination and talent have inspired many generations of embroiderers in the village over time. And beyond.

Characteristics of the Embroidery "Karsaniki"

"Karsaniki" embroidery is distinguished by its geometric and floral patterns, often made in white thread on linen (or cotton).

The designs are created using chain stitches and cross stitches, giving a three-dimensional look to the works. Entirely handmade.

A technique that requires many hours of work, great precision and mastery of gestures, which makes it particularly impressive.

The transmission of tradition

Today, the tradition of "Karsaniki" embroidery is still continued by the inhabitants of Karya .

The village is home to a (beautiful and amazing!) museum dedicated to Maria "Koutsohero", where visitors can discover the history of this unique embroidery, understand (or try to understand 😉) this very particular technique and admire ancient and contemporary works.

Embroidery workshops and classes are also organized to pass on this know-how to new generations.

Karya 's "Karsaniki" embroidery is today a testimony to human resilience, excellence and creativity.

Thanks to Maria "Koutsohero", this unique technique continues to flourish, attracting the admiration of visitors and embroidery enthusiasts from all over the world.
